The Myth of Sisyphus: We Ended the Film on the Reclimb, Not the Fall

Overview

One must imagine Sisyphus happy.

The myth is usually remembered as futility — the endless push, the stone rolling back. We animated it as a narrated stickman short, about eighty-one seconds long, and made one deliberate choice about where to end.

The story

A lone stickman heaves a great boulder up a mountainside at mythic dusk. Near the summit the stone slips and thunders all the way back down. He watches, walks the long walk down… and sets his hands to the stone again.

A grave, measured narrator — a Morgan Freeman sort of cadence — tells the myth beat by beat and closes on Camus: "One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

How we made it

We wanted the weight to feel real, so the physics do the acting. Some of the craft:

• The boulder is physically honest: its rotation is derived from the distance travelled along the slope, and the man leans into the hill at the true slope angle — a rigid, straight-spined push, head high, driving stride.
• The sky is an indigo-to-amber dusk, with the gods' radiance glowing behind the peak, and running caption pills carry the narration.
• Crucially, the film doesn't end on the fall — it ends on the reclimb.

The takeaway

Publishing feels like this some weeks: you push, it rolls back, you start again. The point isn't the boulder. It's that he sets his hands to the stone one more time.
